DREAM READINGS between OLIVIA PLENDER and UNNAR ORN
Curated by Verina Gfader
This evening Olivia Plender and Unnar Orn will perform a reading of selected dreams, as part of a project on a “dream exchange” the artists have developed since they met during a residency at FAAP (Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado) Sao Paolo, Brazil. Some materialities and processes of this project will be provided to the audience who will be invited to contribute a dream to their expanding archive.
The project touches on issues of imagination, exchange, and the ir/rational, which is at the core of Olivia and Unnar’s practices. In particular, the “dream exchange” explores a dialogical relation between image and text over time, when the image becomes a source for someone else’s dream – who is forced to note down what has emerged unconsciously over night.

The artists dedicated the role of taking notes / documenting the evening to the curator of DREAM READINGS. These notes titled memory writing, are, besides a couple of photographs, the only concrete record of the actual event that night.

memory writing 5/6 nov 09 limit to one page/one and a half hour
if I start to write about the evening I start with the event that was announced for 7.30pm but in fact began around 7.45 when a crowd of people gathered around the table and the little bar around the corner, despite the artists’ intention to keep alcoholic drinks for later, for after the performance. Performance writing. Diary. Diagramme.
Olivia begins to talk. All seats are occupied. The additional bench (a kind of second row) is also occupied. Atmosphere attentive, calm.
Tied space. (large table two tables lights mirror scripts paper pencils technical devices cups). A few people stand beside the ‘crowd’, close to the entrance. Introduce yourself briefly. Starts from Olivia’s left. Unnar with powerbook, striped jumper, to Olivia’s right. Names, more names. The round. Tea announced, the possibility of tea throughout event.
The artists told me that the event is highly organised structured. Accidents? Randomness? Dream issues.
Scientific experiments.
Evening a collecting of material, proliferation of stuff. Plural voices, more or less anonymous.
Second? Point of agenda. Instructions to read. Now. Guests are asked to read dreams from script “The Descent” one after the other. Chronological? Semi-chronological. Interruptions. After each dream reading, Olivia asks one, occasionally two questions, guests take notes on the ‘notes-page’ which sits to the left of each dream text.
Too fast. Time tied. No time. Timeliness.
Scribbling. Drawings. Letters. Coherent . Associative. Irregular. Lack. No space. Void. Gaps. Filling. Drawing. My neighbour makes lots of drawings. Human machine plant extensions. Notice murmur. Noise of ‘paper’ – noise? Rhythm. Not allowed to read dream texts when someone else reads. ONLY listening. To the inner sound, mind. To noise.
Not many interruptions in terms of more guests entering scenario.
Closed community. Feeling of. Sense of micro environment. Not really experiment, more like frantically but calmly gathering thoughts, images. The images were there before actually.
Time loop. Reverse.
First point on agenda (after introduction) was a ‘slide-show’ (nature of slide show) consisting of images, mounted on boards, size perhaps A4-ish. Olivia holds them up, one after each other, fairly fast, also. Writing down associations. Women sorting pots. Wood broken. Wittgenstein’s friend. Eroticism. Star birds, anything. Game mind. Colours vivid and bleak. B/w. Drawings. Old, new. World fairs. Architecture.
Tea. More tea. Cookies. Greenish- moon scape. Colour of the moon, planetary.
Another point on agenda (prior) > Instructions for CERTAIN people to have special duties. Hyper-shot of event, group photograph at the end (Colm) – memory writing (Verina) – tea serving (Olivia’s sister). Who else what else. More.
Copyright issues later. Is there a question of the authorial? ! over-shadowed (literally) by other facts.
Dream machine - evening. Non-stop.
Strange voice from powerbook. Unnar sits quietly. Has presence. Fair hair.
Sensation of bodily warmth. Ziczac Signal gallery and Carl. Evening = star map
In between points of the agenda, bits of chatting, talking to neighbours. Aware of other people, but attention turned to oneself (mind, images) and to the guide (Olivia?!).
Dream evening feels real. Concrete. Fast and slow. Decreasing speed. Increasing archive. What if not. Thinking about T.J. Demos “inventing the archive” – text on exile and its paradox. Solutions? Asking for solutions as a contemporary strategy? Dream event might suggest something else.
Reading about family holidays and Japan, why this particular dream? It’s my life. Stealing dreams.
Tristana by Bunuel. Tell Unnar and Olivia.
Mute room.
There are very short, short, and long dream texts. The reading varies. Melodies, like songs. A dream is a score? Maybe.
No aggression in the room. Smooth running, surprisingly. No major interruption. No-one leaves. Cannot leave? (again, Bunuel reference?)
We jump to the last dream text read by Unnar? Or Olivia? Already forgotten. What are major occurrences? Olivia’s voice extremely expressive. As if she is the professional reader. Remembering her talking about how she grew up, in this family believing/integrating the belief in the supernatural in the everyday. Also remembering, that she lost the belief, but only for a very short time (before she worked with an accountant).
Making models for the future.

Wearing an artwork that night. Stitched dream word. Green felt. On blue. On green woolen jumper. Thoughts wander.
